School's in, registration's behind you, and Homecoming season just got real.
Friday, Sept 18: frosh parents run the snack shack alone. This is the one we are short on. No other class is staffing with us, so every shift left unfilled means somebody doubles up. Shifts are about an hour, no clearance or fingerprinting, and the student theme is USA, so wear red, white and blue. Fair warning: your kid will find you at the window. Sign up by Wednesday night.
Sunday, Sept 20: build day, 10am to 3pm. Four weeks of work parties become an actual Route 66 hallway, and at 5pm the Community Showcase opens all four hallways to families. Bring siblings, bring neighbors. Lunch is served around 12:30, and the crew runs on whatever parents send.
They announced it with a reel they made. Watch it, like it, follow @acalanes_2030_. It's their show from here: work parties are rolling, every frosh is welcome, no craft skills required, and students can still sign up for the class skit.
School-wide theme: All Roads Lead to Acalanes. Seniors took Hollywood Blvd, juniors Las Vegas Blvd, sophomores Ocean Blvd Miami.
The school's HOCO Overview is the one document for the whole week: spirit days, lunchtime activities, evening events, and the canned food drive, which is running now and closes Friday, September 25 at 3pm. Bookmark that one too.
Homecoming is a points game and the tally posts daily in the front quad and on @ahs_dons. Most of it is just showing up.

Nothing here that fits? School is also collecting lunchtime activity gear for the cabbage patch where the freshmen eat: basketballs, soccer balls, wiffle bats, old beach blankets. Drop it at the front office.

3 Know
The stuff that doesn't change weekly. Open what you need.
California added rules for school volunteers this year (SB 848), and the short version is friendlier than the rumor mill. One-off help, like a snack-shack shift, takes no paperwork at all. You check in, you get a badge, that's it. APC said it themselves in the September 13 newsletter: standalone opportunities on campus, football and snack shack included, do not require the district's new training.
Extra steps apply to two groups. Ongoing volunteers need fingerprinting, a TB risk assessment, and a short online training. Drivers add a transportation form with license and insurance to Jamielle McDonald, jmcdonald@auhsdschools.org. Forms live on the Athletic Clearances page.
Both got easier in late August. Fingerprints are now booked online, twenty-minute slots at the District Office. Free TB risk assessments run there Thursdays 2 to 4pm, no appointment, no charge. That's an assessment, not a skin test, and for most people it's a short conversation.
Registration is behind you now, but the full picture is worth keeping somewhere. Every line item, what it actually pays for, and what was optional all along.

Not required by the school, but non-refundable once bought, and most families get one. Free entry to home games, $25 saved on Homecoming tickets, a free Acalanes t-shirt, and local discounts. 25% goes straight to athletics. Still on the Webstore if you skipped it, and if your student never got their white ASB shirt, it's waiting in room 314.
Student-designed, a new design each year, and white for the freshman class. Sold in one order window each August, and that window has closed for this year. No restock, no second run. If you ordered, shirts pass out mid-September.
Funds class events now and builds the account for junior/senior prom, senior breakfast, Time of Reflection, and graduation. Straight talk: this doesn't cover everything a class needs by senior year, and students earn a meaningful share of the rest through concessions and events they run. We'll post those here in advance, all year. No surprises.

Now that classes have started, buy to what the teacher actually asked for rather than the generic list. The basics still apply: pens, pencils, college-ruled paper, a couple of 2-inch binders, and wired earbuds for science. The one worth getting right is math, where teachers name the TI-30XIIS scientific calculator, not a graphing one.
